Creative Minds: Using a Phone to Photograph Your Art

Using a Phone to Photograph Your Art

Katy Tartakoff

DATE: May 26th, 6:00pm
LOCATION: Zoom meeting, To get the meeting link, please contact Rebecca Ward.

Today we all use our phones as our cameras.

The goal of this time together is to leave with a beautiful, finished, professional looking photo you can use to market your art.

In my presentation I will address composition, exposure, lighting and how to best capture your subject. Disclaimer, I am not a techie. I know how to use an iPhone and some of the tools on it. Not all.
When presenting our art to the world through social media, prints, ads, emails, etc. I believe we honor ourselves as artists by making the images as professional as possible. We also honor those seeing our art by inviting them in to our world and providing them an opportunity to fall in love with it, thus the chance to translate into a sale.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE WE MEET

CHOOSE one piece of art you wish to photograph.

  • Have the piece as complete as possible. For those with framed art, please refrain from putting the glass on until afterwards.

  • If possible, have a solid background to sit your art on. A clean piece of fabric, counter top, foam core board, wood floor. Please make sure whatever background you choose complements your art and is clean. If it’s fabric, make sure it’s wrinkle free.

  • If it’s art that has depth and dimension as well as shadows, make sure you have some way of sitting it the way you wish. Have little props you can hide to put it in just the right position. Also, if you want more depth, find some light source, (LED adjustable light, a flashlight, a lamp or something to create the shadows you want).

  • Once your art is set the way you want to photograph it, I’ll show you how to use some tools within the phone that will ultimately assist you in making a photo you will be proud of and can use to market your art professionally.

If you don't have Zoom on your computer yet, you may be prompted to download it. It only takes a few minutes but if you want to download it in advance you may here: https://zoom.us/

We can't wait to see you!
